Vacuum pumps are used in laboratories to pump gas or air at pressures below atmospheric pressure. Filtration and many distillation processes are accelerated via vacuum pumps. Due to their high flow, deep vacuum capability, oil-sealed rotary vane pumps have been used for decades. However, due to the fact that vapour will condense in the pump, careful selection of traps, accessories and diligent maintenance is required to ensure trouble-free use. Not all tasks in laboratories need high flow and deep vacuum and there are alternative pumping technologies that may be more suitable. Pump selection Rule of thumb: Approximate flow rate should be 1—2 times the volume to be evacuated (Litres per min) except for filtration, where there the system is not gas tight, use four times the volume to be treated. Exarnples: - Rotary evaporation of 5-Liter flask plus condenser plus tubing (probable 12 L in total), thus pumping with 12x2=24 L/min pump flow rate seems appropriate. - vacuum oven of 50 L1 capaciry 50x2—.'CO Urnin pump flow rate: c. Filtration of 4x7L nasks on manifold plus rubing ($_nyabJe 5L in total), therefore 5x4220L/min pump flow rate. 4. Do not ignore features for ease of handlng Le. gauge etc S.
